Undercurrents on Instagram: "On Oct. 25, the Associated Students of Pomona College sent an email to Pomona students, faculty and staff, condemning President Gabi Starr's Oct. 23 decision to suspend 10 students for the full academic year for their alleged participation in a divestment protest. Since ASPC released their statement on Oct. 25, Starr has suspended two additional students, bringing the total to 12. "The decision made by President Starr is not about justice; it’s about control. This disciplinary approach is oppressive, not restorative. Suspending students for a first-time violation during a protest the Dean of Students already stated was not a threat? That’s not fostering a just or supportive community. And let’s be clear — peaceful protest is a right on this campus," ASPC senators wrote in the statement. The statement also quoted a Dean as saying, "the school is acting on the belief that everyone who entered the building had disruptive intentions, but they lack any way to determine who did what inside the building," and criticized administrators for enacting collective punishment without clear evidence or investigation. ASPC also called on students to wear all black on Monday, Oct. 28, as an act of protest against the suspensions. "Let’s stand together in solidarity and use our collective strength to fight for what’s right. Your support in this Black Out is essential to making our voices heard while we push for justice and accountability," senators wrote in the statement. "We urge you to not remain silent against systems of oppression.""
