Comrades - thanks for allowing me an extra day to prepare this week’s newsletter. I spent yesterday hosting an impromptu study session on the Discord server. We listened to seven (!!) of Lenin’s works, mainly consisting of thoughts on Imperialism and Social Chauvinism. These are two essential topics for understanding the upcoming wars waged by the capitalist powers.
Imperialism is a Marxist concept that I’ve understood as a functioning concept; I could tell when a country was formally imperialist (as opposed to the non-scientific meaning of “aggressive country”), but I couldn’t articulate it well. Thanks to a lot of reading and videos in Russian and English, I got a better grasp of the subject. If you have questions about Imperialism or Social Chauvinism (an advanced form of opportunism), join us for Book Club! I’ve included some videos below in the “Arts, Music, and Videos” section. We’ll be continuing to study the subject over the next few weeks.
We’ll see you tonight (or Friday morning) on Discord!

📜 Last Week in Marxist History
Our Wars, Today on Instagram: "Everything was black, had vanished into the black dust, was destroyed. Only the flames that were beginning to lick their way up had any color. From the dust that was like a fog, figures began to loom up, black, hairless, faceless. They screamed with voices that were no longer human. Their screams drowned out the groans rising everywhere from the rubble, groans that seemed to rise from the very earth itself. – excerpt from survivors of Hiroshima. --- Left: A watch in the Hiroshima rubble is stopped at 8:15 a.m., the moment of the atomic detonation. Right: A human shadow scars the steps of a bank in Hiroshima, imprinted by the extreme heat of the blast. --- “I felt at that moment was that Hiroshima was entirely covered with only three colors. I remember red, black and brown, but nothing else. Many people on the street were killed almost instantly. The fingertips of those dead bodies caught fire and the fire gradually spread over their entire bodies from their fingers. A light gray liquid dripped down their hands, scorching their fingers. I was so shocked to know that fingers and bodies could be burned and deformed like that. I just couldn't believe it. It was horrible. And looking at it, it was more than painful for me to think how the fingers were burned, hands and fingers that would hold babies or turn pages, they just, they just burned away. For a few years after the A-bomb was dropped, I was terribly afraid of fire. I wasn't even able to get close to fire because all my senses remembered how fearful and horrible the fire was, how hot the blaze was, and how hard it was to breathe the hot air. It was really hard to breathe. Maybe because the fire burned all the oxygen, I don't know. I could not open my eyes enough because of the smoke, which was everywhere. Not only me but everyone felt the same.” - Akiko Takakura Ms. Takakura was 20 years old when the bomb fell. She was in the Bank of Hiroshima, 300 meters away from the hypocenter. She escaped death despite having over 100 lacerations on her back and is one of the few survivors who was within 300 meters of the hypocenter. --- Continued below in comments:”
workingclasshistory @August 7, 2023 12:20 AM (EDT)
On this day, 7 August 1936, revolutionary workers in Spain conducted a ceremonial "execution" of the huge Catholic Monument of the Sacred Heart near Madrid, in a location considered the exact centre of Spain. The statue was shot by a firing squad of working class people who had risen up against a fascist and right-wing military rebellion, and launched a social revolution. The Catholic Church, which for many years had been a brutal and oppressive force in Spain, supported the fascists in their campaign of mass murder and terror against workers and peasants.

💬 Global Comrades
Antijob.net on Instagram: "Peaceful strike of Kazakh oil workers from Zhanaozen is met by authorities and management with complete lawlessness, threats, and dismissals. The workers of the oil company "Moldyrmunaiservice" went on strike and have been demanding a raise in salaries and equal rights for workers for a whole month now - they receive different salaries for the same work. The management immediately responded to the strike of its workers - they threatened them with dismissal. Strikes of oil workers have already occurred in Zhanaozen, which gathered a large number of protesters and even demonstrators. The workers of "BeriAli" even went to Astana, demanding fair wages. The current strikers of "Moldyrmunaiservice" say that now "BeriAli" workers are paid much more. They want to follow their path and also achieve an increase in salaries. However, the authorities decided to join the company's management and put pressure on the strikers with the dirtiest methods. No appeals by workers to officials work - officials do not want to listen to peaceful appeals. They are pushing the workers towards more radical actions: police raids are crawling to the homes of the strikers, local police officers are going to intimidate the wives and children of the workers, demanding that they obediently return to work. Despite the monstrous heat (from +48 to +55 degrees Celsius in Zhanaozen), the workers remain on the street, continuing the strike. They demand that cowardly authorities leave their wives and mothers alone and meet with workers face to face, but no one is in contact with the strikers, and negotiations have not even begun. The residents of Zhanaozen treat the striking compatriots with respect and solidarity - they bring them food and water. The management of the company "Moldyrmunaiservice" treats the strikers like garbage - all workers were given dismissal notices. Now the oil workers, driven to the extreme, are ready to go to Astana. #strike #dismissal #oil #solidarity #zhanaozen #kazakhstan #antijob"
