red. on Instagram: "Few individuals in German history have struggled against militarism and war as much as the pioneering communist Karl Liebknecht, born on this day in 1871. His notable quote, "The main enemy is within our own country," resonates across time and remains pertinent even today.⁣ ⁣ Amid WWI, Liebknecht and his close comrade Rosa Luxemburg organized a mass rebellion of German workers and soldiers. During the November Revolution of 1918-1919, the Communist faction attempted to deal a fatal blow to the crumbling German monarchy but failed in the power struggle against the Social Democrats, who allied with fascist forces.⁣ ⁣ Liebknecht was born in Leipzig – his godfathers were Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The radical lawyer fought for working-class people and activists in court, laid the theoretical foundation for the anti-militarist struggle, and co-founded several significant communist organizations, including the Communist Party of Germany (KPD).⁣ ⁣ Liebknecht and Luxemburg were murdered during the suppression of the Spartacus uprising in 1919 by fascist paramilitaries, for which the KPD holds the SPD partly responsible. red. on Instagram: "“Down with France” and “Down with ECOWAS” chants echoed at protests in front of the French military base in Niamey, Niger. Thousands took to the streets just hours after the West African bloc ECOWAS, which has close ties to the West, took further steps toward a military invasion of Niger to remove the coup government. “Since the advent of the coup d’etat, they threaten us, and we will answer their threats, and we will do it until they leave our country,” a demonstrator said. A second protester added, “We no longer want France. Leave Niger without delay and leave us in peace.” ECOWAS ordered “the deployment of the Standby Force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger” in an official statement backed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who threatened that the US would hold the coup leaders accountable. Western powers fear Niger could follow in the footsteps of Mali and Burkina Faso, which have established close ties with Russia. As a result, they could lose control of Niger’s highly contested resources, such as uranium. Niger’s coup leaders have accused ex-colonial power France, a close ally of overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum, of being behind ECOWAS’ hardline stance. #ECOWAS #NigerCoup #AfricaPolitics”

red. on Instagram: "Sri Lankan police used water cannons and arrested protesters as they broke up student protests in the capital, Colombo. Protesters were calling for the immediate release of jailed activists and a reversal of IMF-imposed government policies. Sri Lanka's inflation peaked at 69.8% in September 2022. Inflation was temporarily reduced following a $2.9 billion IMF deal in March to single digits. However, the IMF imposed mass privatization as part of the deal. Sri Lanka's total debt is over $83bn, of which $41.5bn is foreign and $42.1bn is domestic. The island nation south of India is still struggling with high inflation despite the 2022 uprisings against the worst economic crisis since independence, which forced President Gotabaya Rajapaksa out of the country. Thousands of students who were at the forefront of the protests were systematically persecuted and arrested after the change of government. #SriLankaProtests #IMF #AntiCapitalism”

Short vs Long Form Book Club - which is for you? Thanks to popular request, we now host two sections of our Marist Book Club each week! Short-Form Book Club Hosted on Monday nights and Saturday afternoons, this section covers short, yet crucial texts. These are usually 30-60 minute reads that are encapsulated in one evening. Average club meeting time 1.5-2 hours. Long-Form Book Club Hosted on Monday evenings, this section covers longer books. These are usually 2-4 hour reads that are broken into multiple meetings. Average club meeting time 1.5-2 hours. So, which should you attend? We recommend both if your schedule allows - requiring 3 hour each week. Even if you cannot attend, we encourage you to listen/read the books on your own time.
