Hello comrades - welcome back. This week’s newsletter covers a range of topics, including membership in alt-right extremist groups, calls for insurrection over the indictment of ex-president Trump, and news about our second section of the book club.
On a housekeeping note, there was another death in my family, so the exact dates of the newsletter will be up in the air over the next few weeks as family comes into town.
I’m still experimenting with formats for the newsletter. I realized along the way that I was overfilling them with information, so I’ve tried to split the content between the Monday/Tuesday newsletter and the Thursday/Friday newsletter.
If you have an extra moment, could you follow my new Instagram account? The old one was hit with too many bans. Now, onto the news!

🎧 Music
My favorite part of the newsletter is that I can add anything I think is cool or quirky! As it turns out, I opened my laptop today and saw I had this song open in my browser. I probably opened the tab while looking for images — you have to admit this is a beautiful cover!

📜 Last Week in Marxist History
Today marks the anniversary of the CIA's first Latin American coup: the 1954 coup in Guatemala that overthrew the democratically elected left-leaning president Jacobo Árbenz and replaced him with a brutal 40-year US-backed military dictatorship that would oversee the torture and mass murder of hundreds of thousands of people, mostly leftists, as well as the genocide of Guatemala's Indigenous people, the Maya. Upon taking office, Árbenz proposed land reforms that would redistribute land, which was seen as a threat to the interests of the powerful US-based United Fruit Company. Despite his moderate leftist policies, he was labeled a communist by Washington, and the US company lobbied for his removal. Unable to force change diplomatically, the US government planned and financed an invasion by the CIA and local military personnel. The support of brutal right-wing military coups, mostly against communist or left-leaning forces, in Latin America became one of the most used weapons of US imperialism. As this map shows, the coup set the course for US imperialism strategy across the continent.
