2 MARCH 1919 - THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL IS BORNThe Communist International (in abbreviated to Comintern) was the international organization of communist parties active from 2 March 1919 to 15 May 1943, also known as the Third International. Lenin recalls it thus:"The I International laid the foundations for the international proletarian struggle for socialism. The Second International was the epoch of preparing the ground for a large mass diffusion of the movement in a good number of countries. The Third International has reaped the fruits of the activity of the Second International, swept away the bourgeois and petty-bourgeois opportunist, social-chauvinist filth and has begun to implement the dictatorship of the proletariat. The international union of the parties leading the most revolutionary movement in the world, the movement of the proletariat for the overthrow of the yoke of capital, today has a solid foundation like no other ever: a certain number of Soviet republics which personify, on an international scale , the dictatorship of the proletariat, its victory over capitalism. The world historic importance of the Third International, of the Communist International, lies in having begun to put into practice Marx's greatest slogan, the slogan which sums up the centuries-old development of socialism and the workers' movement, the slogan that is expressed in the concept of the dictatorship of the proletariat. This ingenious prediction, this ingenious theory comes true. Today these Latin words are translated into all the national languages of modern Europe, indeed, into all the languages of the world. A new epoch of world history has begun."(Vladimir Lenin, "The III International and its place in history")
