- On Aug. 15, 55 Orientation Adventure leaders walked out of Pomona Dean of Students Avis Hinkson’s welcome back dinner at her house. Four days later, 32 Resident Assistants and 12 First Year Sponsors walked out of another welcome dinner Hinkson hosted for Housing and Residence Life student workers. During both walk outs, student speakers gave speeches in protest of Pomona’s repression of the student divestment movement, especially Pomona’s refusal to drop charges against 19 students arrested on April 5, and called for Pomona to adhere to PDfA demands and drop the charges.
On April 5, 2024, Pomona President Gabi Starr called in five departments of riot police to arrest 19 students participating in a sit in for divestment in Alexander Hall. The Los Angeles District Attorney filed criminal charges for trespassing against the arrested students on July 15.
Students at the OA walkout spoke in solidarity with the arrested students before calling on their peers to join the walkout.
“We cannot and will not stand by while our friends are punished for having the courage to act on their convictions. As OA leaders, we are here not just to help students transition into college, but to uphold the principles of community and compassion that Pomona claims to value,” said one of the student speakers at the OA walkout.
On Aug. 19, RAs and Sponsors walked out of another dinner for student workers at Hinkson’s house.
“We talk about the role of building community and building an effective place where students can learn and grow, but Pomona has not been a safe place for students to learn and grow. We all know what it was like last semester when we had 20 of our peers arrested and detained, being removed from housing,” said a student speaker at the RA walkout.
On the night of April 5, Pomona placed all arrested Pomona students on “interim suspension,” immediately depriving them of housing and access to campus. Pomona also pressured students to take flights home and contacted students’ family members when they refused.

- "Unity of Fields: Opening Up a New Front We are transitioning Palestine Action US into what it has become through necessity: a militant front against the US-NATO-zionist axis of imperialism. How could we have only “solidarity” with the people whose suffering and death are required by our Amerikan way of living? It is not enough. We have long exhausted the passive solidarity movement framework. The Palestinian insurgency launched on Oct 7 put the question of revolutionary anti-imperialist struggle back on the table, and the way forward is clear: It is our duty as people in the imperial core to open a new front against the US Empire. To build the international popular cradle of resistance . Empires do not just collapse on their own; if victory over imperialism is possible, it will be because struggles against it have erupted all across the world, including here in the core. 👇 continued in comments"

- Israeli men threaten to rape Palestinian men
- “Rape in the name of God” — these are the words of an Israeli settler who attacked a Palestinian family and threatened them with rape. A new video released by human rights organization B’Tselem documents an attack on a Palestinian family in South Hebron Hills in the occupied West Bank. During the attack, an Israeli settler threatened a Palestinian man with rape by mentioning Sde Teiman, the known Israeli torture center where soldiers rape Palestinian prisoners.

A recent military investigation was launched after a Palestinian prisoner was hospitalized, following sexual abuse by Israeli soldiers. This incident sparked widespread outrage, not against the alleged crime, but against the investigation itself. Some protests, reportedly supported by certain Israeli politicians, even defended the “‘right” to rape Palestinian prisoners.”

- Middle East Eye on Instagram: "Social media users are sending tributes, prayers and messages of condolences to the family and friends of 19-year-old vlogger Mohammed “Medo” Halimy, after he was killed in Gaza.
- Known for documenting daily life under Israeli bombardment, Halimy shared videos of living in a tent, facing food and water shortages, and starting a planting project which he described as an act of “resistance". The 19-year-old was injured by shrapnel while with friends on the beach in Gaza during an Israeli airstrike on 26 August, causing him to fall into a coma and later die from his injuries."

- The Communist Party of Kenya publicly apologized to the people of Haiti for its invasion of Haiti on behalf of the US. The spokesperson states that the people of Haiti are now being subjected to the same violence Kenyans experienced at the hands of the police at home.
- In June 2024, Kenyan police were sent to “restore order” to the gang-controlled country. Massive protests spread across Haiti earlier this year, calling on the US-backed Ariel Henry to resign. Armed gangs then exploited the power vacuum that followed and currently control about 85% of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
- In the first six months of 2024, five children a week were killed or injured in Haiti, totaling 131 children. More than 600,000 Haitians have been displaced and become homeless due to gang violence. NGO Save the Children warned that given the track record of the Kenyan forces, the invasion would likely only lead to more violence and suffering.
Argentina
- Clashes between Argentinian retirees and police erupted in the South American country’s capital, Buenos Aires. The retirees took to the streets to protest ultra-neoliberal President Javier Milei’s veto of a newly passed pension reform.
- With an inflation rate of a whopping 263.4%, Argentina continues to grapple with a crippling inflation crisis. To compensate for this, the country’s senate passed a pension bill to raise retirement benefits by over 8%. The new law also guarantees that the minimum pension will be enough to afford essential goods for the elderly who are facing severe levels of poverty.
- Milei, convinced that lawmakers only seek to break his austerity program, announced that he would fully veto the new pension bill. “I will veto everything, I don’t give a damn,” Milei previously said, insisting on standing by his administration’s zero fiscal deficit policy.
India
- Protests in the Indian state of West Bengal turned violent as major clashes between police and protesters erupted. The wave of protests over the rape and murder of a female junior doctor earlier this month in Kolkata continues. Protesters are demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
- The far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition party to the chief minister’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) party in West Bengal, has largely co-opted the protests. The party has called for a 12-hour bandh (general strike) in the state to protest alleged police atrocities against protesters. Meanwhile, police accuse the BJP of trying to orchestrate large-scale violence.
- During the 12-hour bandh, reports of clashes between BJP and TMC workers have sprung up. BJP leader Priyangu Pandey was shot at, with bombs hurled at the car he was traveling in. Pandey claims the incident was an attack by TMC workers in a joint conspiracy with the police.
