English
Authoritarianism (from Latin auctoritas - power, influence) is an antidemocratic system of political governance. It is characteristic of the most reactionary political systems of capitalist states (fascist regimes in Germany, Italy, Spain, and others). Authoritarianism is a form of totalitarian political regime and governance in which the procedure of democratic decision-making is either absent or has a fictitious, formal character. Political power is not formed or controlled by the people, and they do not have any guarantees in the face of an absolutely uncontrolled authoritarian power. Real power is concentrated in the hands of the ruling elite, which is selected by a special procedure. Authoritarianism is characterized by excessive centralism, monopolization of power by the elite, strict hierarchy in the relationships between its members, direct reliance on the military-punitive apparatus, and widespread use of terrorist methods to deal with opposition. In authoritarian states, supreme power is usually concentrated in the hands of the "leader" (Fuhrer, Duce, Caudillo, and others).
Authoritarian ideology is characterized by demagoguery, the use of racial, nationalist, religious, and other myths, and an appeal to the unquestionable authority of the "leader." Authoritarian power constantly cultivates fanaticism among the masses and maintains fear.
The general crisis of capitalism is characterized by the contraction of bourgeois democracy, a tendency toward autocratic and fascist methods of governance. Despite the military collapse of fascism during World War II (1939-45), authoritarian tendencies continue to operate, as evidenced, in particular, by military-police coups in a number of countries, the revival of neo-Nazism and neo-fascism, the financial oligarchy's desire to establish a regime of personal power, orientation toward emergency laws, and the banning of communist and workers' parties and other progressive democratic organizations in some countries.
